Guide · GST registration for online sellers

Can you use one GST number for multiple businesses or brands?

Yes, you can use one GST number for multiple businesses or brands, as long as they belong to the same legal entity (same PAN) and operate from the same state. You need a separate GSTIN for each state you operate in and for each separate legal entity, such as a company or LLP.

How does GST registration work for multiple businesses or brands?

GST registration follows your PAN and your state, not your brand. Under Section 25 of the CGST Act, a person gets one registration per state or Union territory in which they are liable to register, and every registration is tied to a PAN. The GSTIN itself shows this: the first two digits are the state code and the next ten are your PAN.

So the useful question is not "how many brands do I have" but "how many PANs and how many states do I operate through". Brands, product lines and websites sit inside that structure; they do not create new GST registrations on their own.

Can you run several brands under one GSTIN?

Yes. A proprietor, company or LLP can sell several brands, run several websites and list on several marketplaces under a single GSTIN in a state, as long as it is the same legal person. You issue invoices in the name registered on the GSTIN, and you file one set of GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B returns for that state.

The GST portal has a trade name field, and a trade name change is treated as a core-field amendment that needs officer approval. Some practitioners record an additional trade name, but how it appears on the certificate varies. Do not assume your second brand name will appear on the GST certificate. Brands usually appear only on your listings and invoices, which is normally enough.

If a brand operates from another premises in the same state, you can add it as an additional place of business. The portal treats additional place of business within the same state as a core-field amendment, filed through the amendment application (Form GST REG-14) and approved by the officer with an order in Form GST REG-15. Warehouses in other states are different; see below.

When do you need a separate GSTIN?

SituationSeparate GSTIN?
Second brand, same owner, same stateNo. Same GSTIN.
Second brand run through a different legal entity (for example a new Pvt Ltd or LLP)Yes. A new entity has its own PAN, so it needs its own GSTIN.
Same PAN, stock or business in a second stateYes. One registration per state.
Same PAN, same state, more than one place of businessOptional. You may take a separate registration for each place of business.
A proprietor and the proprietor's companyYes. Different legal persons, different PANs.

Different states are the case most online sellers hit. If you hold inventory in an Amazon or Flipkart warehouse in another state, that is a place of business there and you need a registration in that state. Our guide on virtual office and GST registration covers the address side of this.

Can you take a separate GST registration for each business vertical in the same state?

Not in the old form. Before 1 February 2019, Section 25(2) allowed separate registration for "business verticals" within a state. That wording was replaced, and the current provision (with Rule 11 of the CGST Rules, as substituted by Notification No. 3/2019-Central Tax) lets you take separate registration only for each separate place of business in a state. Having a different product line does not qualify by itself.

Rule 11 attaches conditions. All your registrations in the state must be under the same scheme: you cannot pay under composition at one place and under regular GST at another. Supplies between your own separately registered places are taxable, with a tax invoice or bill of supply. And under Section 25(4), each registration is treated as a distinct person for the purposes of the Act.

For most founders this is extra work with little benefit. Rule 11 exists for businesses with genuinely separate premises, not for separating brands.

Can you sell taxable and exempt products under one GSTIN?

Yes. One GSTIN can cover both taxable and exempt goods. The exception is the registration exemption for sellers dealing only in exempt goods, which you lose once you add a taxable product to the mix. If one brand sells exempt items and another sells taxable goods, the combined business is no longer "exempt only". Our guide on GST-exempt products on Amazon explains which sellers can skip registration and why this matters.

Does turnover from all your businesses count together?

Yes, and this is the point that surprises people. The registration threshold is measured on aggregate turnover under Section 2(6) of the CGST Act, on an all-India basis against a single PAN. Taxable, exempt and export supplies are all counted. Splitting one PAN into two GSTINs, in one state or several, does not reset the limit.

It works the other way too. Separate entities with separate PANs are assessed separately. But the tax authorities can look at whether a split is a real business arrangement or only a way to stay under a limit, so do not create entities purely for that reason. Composition scheme eligibility is also tested across all registrations under the same PAN.

What does Amazon or Flipkart allow for multiple brands?

Marketplace rules are separate from GST law, and they change. Amazon's general policy, as stated by Amazon staff on its seller forum, is one Seller Central account per region, with exceptions where there is a legitimate business need and your accounts are in good standing. Check the current Seller Central policy before opening a second account.

In practice, most sellers run all their brands from one account tied to one GSTIN, and register each brand separately for Brand Registry using its trademark. If your brands are in different legal entities, each entity generally has its own account and GSTIN. Our trademark service covers Brand Registry for each brand.

One GSTIN or separate entities: which is better?

  • One GSTIN, one entity. Lower cost, one set of returns, pooled input tax credit, simple accounting. The downside is shared liability: a dispute or debt in one brand can reach the whole business, and a sale of one brand means selling part of the entity.
  • Separate entities, separate GSTINs. Cleaner liability, easier to bring in investors or sell one brand, separate books. The downside is more compliance: separate returns, audits where applicable, separate bank accounts, and tax on any transfers of goods between entities. Credit does not flow between GSTINs automatically.

If you are still choosing a structure, see our comparison of Pvt Ltd, LLP, OPC and proprietorship.

What we'd check in your case

  • How many legal entities (PANs) actually sell, and whether a new one is needed or only a new brand name.
  • Which states hold your stock, including marketplace warehouses.
  • Whether any brand sells only exempt goods, which affects registration.
  • Combined turnover across all PANs you control, and whether a split really helps.
  • Trademark and Brand Registry status of each brand, since the trademark owner should match the selling entity.

Related questions

Can I add a new product category to my existing GSTIN?

Yes. You can add goods or services to your existing registration by updating the HSN or SAC details in your registration on the GST portal. This is treated as a non-core amendment. You do not need a new GSTIN for a new product line in the same state.

Can a proprietor have two GST numbers in the same state?

Not for the same business just because of a second brand. Section 25(2) allows a separate registration only for a separate place of business in a state, under Rule 11 conditions. A proprietor and a company the proprietor owns are different persons with different PANs, so each gets its own GSTIN.

Do I need a new GSTIN if I open a second online store or website?

No. A new website or storefront under the same legal entity does not need a new registration. You need one only if you start operating from a new state, for example by storing goods in a warehouse there.

How do I add a warehouse to my GST registration?

For a warehouse in the same state, you can add it as an additional place of business through the core-field amendment (Form GST REG-14). For a warehouse in another state, you need a fresh registration in that state under the same PAN.

Can a Pvt Ltd company and its director share a GSTIN?

No. A company and its director are separate legal persons with different PANs. Each needs its own GSTIN if it sells, and supplies between them are treated as supplies between two distinct persons.
